In the South of the main island of Venice is a long walkway called the Zattere, running alongside the Canale della Giudecca. This canal is the largest in Venice, with many enormous ocean-going ships and other craft churning up waves in its waters. On the far side is the island of Giudecca, and at its extreme Eastern tip lies the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Its Palladian church and campanile are among the finest in Venice. This view has been painted many times by Turner and Monet, among many others. |
