This painting shows the pedestrian walkway of the old Charing Cross bridge over the Thames, now replaced by the new Hungerford Bridge. Painted in 1990, it shows a cross section of Londoners,  the smart city gentleman with his daughter, a couple of young people and an old tramp crossing the Thames. The angular structure of girders of the railway cast shadows on the pavement, reflecting the modern buildings of Charing Cross station. Compare the painting 'Le Pont de l'Europe' by Gustave Caillebotte, which was part of the inspiration for this work.
